Between 1960 and 1980, rural Brazil lost 26 million people to its cities. The Northeast shed 4.5 million; São Paulo absorbed 4.4 million. Paraná reversed from gaining 792,000 in the 1960s to losing 1.2 million in the 1970s. The dataset provides net migration balances and net migration rates for all Brazilian states, by sex, five-year age group, and urban/rural residence, for the decades 1960–1970 and 1970–1980 — over 6,500 observations estimated from the 1960, 1970, and 1980 censuses.
